From rural roots to the stars.

Meet Savaria

Hi, I’m Savaria. I am a first-generation college student and aspiring Planetary Scientist who is passionate about making science and opportunity accessible. I grew up in a rural town with limited resources and very few mentors to guide me. Much of what I know now came from learning things the hard way, such as how to find internships, build a network, and apply for programs I never thought I would be able to get into.

Despite those challenges, I have gone on to win national awards, conduct research with leading scientists, and participate in conferences across the country. My work includes analyzing brown dwarf atmospheres using data from the James Webb Space Telescope and exploring atypical supernovae. I have received recognition for my academic excellence, public service, and commitment to scientific outreach. Some of which include:

  • American Astronomical Society Chambliss Student Achievement Award

  • Geosciences Undergraduate Student Service Award

  • Geosciences Excellence Award

  • Virginia Tech Student Affairs: Commit to Unwavering Curiosity Aspire Award

  • National Association of Black Geoscientists Participation Award

  • Association of Women Geoscientists IDEA Scholarship

  • Bob and Mary McClelland Aspire! Ut Prosim Scholarship

Additionally, for nearly a year, I worked as a career advisor, helping students strengthen their resumes, craft standout applications, and navigate the internship and job search process with confidence. Separately, I also serve as a peer mentor for my department’s Career and Professional Development course, where I guide students through academic planning, skill-building, and goal setting.

Thanks to Savaria’s expertise and professional guidance, she provided detailed feedback that helped me showcase my academic and career strengths in a way that made my application stand out!

Because Savaria is like a sponge bringing in opportunities and resources, she knows how to share them with other students too. Savaria’s curiosity is not selfish–it is giving.
